The Parenting Show is HERE!

From a young age I always knew that I wanted to work in radio and when I was 16, I made it happened! Over the years I worked at a number of radio stations (on-air and behind the scenes in promotions and marketing) and for a while I was out of the industry. 3 months ago, that all changed. I was given an opportunity that I just couldn’t say no to and so I returned to my old stomping ground at Corus Radio Toronto as the host of the NEW and much needed show on Talk Radio AM640…The Parenting Show (thanks to executive producer Sandra Carusi).

We all know that being a parent isn’t easy…it’s scary, it’s exciting, it’s overwhelming, it’s crazy but it’s definitely not easy! As the saying goes “it takes a village to raise a child” and The Parenting Show is exactly that village that they speak about. Three important ways to get your resume noticed

Mammas, I get it.

We’re often head of the household (either formally or informally) and we have TONNES on the go at any given time. Not only do we have to take care of ourselves, but we are responsible for EVERYTHING to do with our littles.

It feels like there’s just no time.

But, part of being so responsible means looking out for our own opportunities to grow professionally – for intellectual stimulation, added challenges and to provide even better for our families.

So, when was the last time you updated your resume?

In case it’s been a while for you, I’ve put together some ways you can revamp your resume to get noticed, in between all of the caring and coping and craziness of motherhood.


# 1: Make sure your professional summary actually summarizes your key qualifications for the position.

I often see resumes with vague and generic professional summaries. Things like:

Key Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Detail oriented with the ability work under pressure
  • Report writing

 This summary does a poor job of differentiating the applicant from the others. And worse yet, it usually appears at the top of the resume so that it’s the first thing the reader sees.

Now consider this professional summary:

Key Qualifications:

  • Greeted customers and managed the return and exchange process for a busy retail store.
  • Wrote summary reports on board meetings including capturing the findings and developing insights.

You have only a few seconds to grab the reader’s attention, so instead of listing generic skills, describe your qualifications that the hiring manager is actually looking for.

The aim of your resume is to stand out from the other applicants and communicate your unique value.

But how do you communicate your uniqueness?

# 2: Use quantitative accomplishment statements in your resume.

Quantitative statements incorporate numerical values to convey your accomplishments in a way tangible way. It helps the reader get a clearer understanding of what you did AND what you can contribute to the new organization.

Consider the following two statements. The first one is a duty-focused statement and the second one is a quantitative statement.

  1. Organized several external conferences.
  1. Planned and coordinated three conferences for over 400 guests including staff, stakeholders and global management.

Which one sounds more impressive to you?

By adding numbers like “three conferences” and “400 guests” it helps bring the accomplishment to life so that the reader can feel the benefit.

Which brings us to the last step.

# 3: State the benefit of your accomplishments

Businesses usually have at least one of three main reasons for wanting to hire:

  1. To make money
  2. To save money
  3. To solve a problem

So, if you can tie back your accomplishments to how they created a benefit for the company (or client or patient), then you end up showing a direct link to how your work provides benefit – without relying on the reader to make assumptions about the results.

Here are some examples of tying in the benefit with your qualitative achievement:

  • Assisted with planning and execution of seven national and international trade shows
    in a one-month period, adding 150 prospective clients to the list.
  • Greeted and consulted with up to 100 customers per shift, sharing product knowledge
    and assisting in purchase decisions.
  • Followed up with trade show prospects to provide product details and arrange on-site product trials, leading to 50+ purchase orders.

Bonus points for making the benefit quantitative too.

These are three important ways you can distinguish yourself from other applicants. Focus on writing statements that are unique to you, that no other applicant could write and have them be true.

COCOLILY = #CommunityOverCompetition

If you are fortunate in life, you will encounter some pretty special people. People that will empower you, inspire you, and genuinely care about you. This is exactly how I feel about my friend Renee Dimitrovski, owner and founder of the COCOLILY brand. Renee is an amazing woman, mother, daughter and friend who has helped many women over the span of her career which is why I want to share her story and share with you the wonderful things she’s doing with the COCOLILY Social coming up later this month.

This is Renee and this is her COCOLILY story…


The idea all started by Renee Dimitrovski, a single mom, entrepreneur, a daughter and a friend who is passionate about what she does, inspired by those in her life and committed to helping others. She also knows that in order to succeed, you need a tribe of amazing people who have your back.

She started producing events such as The Original Wedding Soiree and The Original Petite Soiree eight years ago.  She then launched COCOLILY Magazine which molded into a lifestyle brand for celebration and inspiration.

Renee believes in being authentic, community over competition and she also believes in The COCOLILY Social : a creative event for the female entrepreneur – and she is hoping that you will too.The COCOLILY Social is very near and dear to her heart as she is trying to bring together a community of women who will be there for each other and support one another while providing a unique experience and inspirational event.

Renee is striving to start a movement that allows for women to know that they are not alone on their journey and putting it out there that when women support each other, incredible things happen.  Society has done enough damage where we are accustomed to be catty, competitive and mean.  She is trying to change that and bring together women who also believe in the COCOLILY manifesto. The funds being contributed and received will assist towards the total bill for food & beverage at the venue in addition to event rental space.  The fees at the venue:

  1. venue rental…$8,750
  2. meals for 150 guests (breakfast, lunch and dinner and breaks) $25,410
  3. audio visual/electrical $3,500

That is just the venue alone and does not include insurance costs, decor, rentals, and printing.  The $15,500 will help to cover some of the cost for the meals – asking for over $25K is shooting for the stars. 

Coming to realize this, Renee knows she can’t do this alone. COCOLILY has been built by one person, Renee, and she does not have a team of mavens.  She is the accountant, bookkeeper, marketing manager, sales manager and logistics coordinator – and she simply doesn’t have the manpower or marketing funds to go full throttle unfortunately.

This event is not for profit and the goal is to come together as a community, build your tribe, celebrate, dream, relax, collaborate, learn from each other and share experiences.

A lot of us chase those dreams alone but Renee is trying to change that. Have your dream, take it with you to The COCOLILY Social, share it with your new tribe and know that you have a lot of support. Whether it’s asking a simple question, needing advice or letting go of those fears of failure.

You have a dream…now what? Tasty Tuesdays with The Mutts Kitchen is COMING SOON!

Denise ~ As a full time working mom with 2 boys, my motto is healthy and quick. If I’m not at work or running around with the kids, I’m in the kitchen creating new recipes. My mom always told me if you didn’t make it yourself, don’t serve it and that always stuck!

Ashley ~ Being a mother to three boys, wife to a hungry man and the only female in the house doesn’t always work in my favour. If I’m not two steps ahead at all times, the kitchen fridge and cupboards will be hijacked! I enjoy to cook Portuguese meals, but love to experiment with different flavours and techniques.

Melissa ~ I am a wife and a mother to a very energetic almost 2 year old. I love to cook but, being recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes I have over hauled how I cook. I enjoy taking favourite meals and changing them up to make them low carb and diabetic friendly.

So there you have it…3 Chic Mammas doing their thing in the kitchen and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us 🙂

Have you met DENISE?


Have you met Denise? Well then, you don’t know what you are missing! I, of course, am talking about one of my all time fave places to shop…Denise Boutiques.
