You’ve probably heard of chia seeds but have no idea what they are or what they do so here is some information on the tiny healthy seeds.  The more I read about them the more determined I am to add them every day to my yogurt or smoothies!!!

What are they?

Chia seeds come from a flowering plant in the mint family that’s native to Mexico and Guatemala, and history suggests it was a very important food crop for the Aztecs. These seeds are gluten free, kosher certified, organic and do not come from GMO crops.

The little seed — which comes in either white or a dark brown and black colour — also has a huge nutritional profile. It contains calcium, manganese, and phosphorus, and is a great source of healthy omega-3 fats.  I’m talking ounce for ounce, chia seeds have more omega-3 fatty acids than salmon! Sprouted Chia Seeds are also a source of iron and fiber.  What’s great about chia seeds is that they can be eaten whole or milled, while flax seeds have to be ground before consumption in order to access their health benefits.

These activated sprouted seeds deliver more nutrients per gram when compared to raw, non-sprouted chia seeds. The sprouting process improves digestibility and allows for a greater absorption of nutrients. Enzyme inhibitors are eliminated and anti-nutritive compounds such as phytic acid are reduced. The sprouting process not only dramatically increases vitamins and minerals in the seed, it also doubles the antioxidant score (ORAC) making Sprouted Chia not only a nutritional powerhouse, but also more shelf stable than raw Chia seeds.

Some benefits?

– It has a positive impact balancing blood glucose levels (making it awesome for diabetics).
– It’s a complete protein with all 8 essential amino acids.
– Helps with weight loss…when chia seeds are exposed to water they expand in size making you feel fuller.
– Age defying antioxidants…help protect the body from free radicals, aging and cancer. The high antioxidant profile also helps them have a long shelf life. They last almost two years without refrigeration.
– More energy…Chia is one of nature’s highest plant-based sources of complete protein.
– Chia contains more calcium than milk and more vitamin c that oranges and is a great food for healthy skin, hair and nails.

What can you do with them?

Sprinkle them on yogurt, salad, oatmeal or cereal, add them to smoothies or juice, use milled seeds for baking or soak the seeds until they form a gel that can be added to a variety of recipes.
